Stress – How can it affect you?
In the modern, fast-paced world we generally live the kind of lives that cause us to accumulate unhealthy levels of stress. Stress can occur when we have several competing demands placed upon us. These may include major life events, expectations from others or from ourselves, environmental demands and many others.
Now, small to moderate levels of stress can be quite useful. It helps motivate us to do things and perform to our level of satisfaction. But it can reach unhealthy levels when we feel overloaded, worried or wound-up.
We can know that stress has reached unhealthy levels when we experience symptoms such as
- Mental or physical agitation
- Frequent hyperventilation
- Signs of high blood pressure
If we experience these signs and symptoms for a prolonged period of time, there may be physical consequences that affect us medically. For example, gastric ulcers and other gastrointestinal symptoms, hypertension, increased chance of stroke and so on.
Psychologists can be quite effective in treating stress. We use empirically proven methods such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This type of therapy can help people control their levels of stress. CBT can reduce it down to the small or moderate level that help us and motivate us to achieve our goals in life.
