Parenting is a learning experience
Even though parenting can be immensely rewarding, it can also be a stressful, time-consuming part of our lives.
We all want the best for our children. Before we have children, we may envisage any children we have to be well-behaved, polite, strong, confident individuals who will succeed in life.
As an adult bringing up children, we are responsible not just for the day-to-day aspects of providing for our children’s needs. We also need to instill in them social skills, life skills and appropriate behaviour. We need to teach them right from wrong and the various moral and ethical values they need.
Challenges of Parenting
When children come along, we may discover that bringing them up may be a more difficult or daunting task than we imagined. This may be due to many different factors. Some of them are related to the children themselves, some related to ourselves and others related to the circumstances we find ourselves in. The way we were parented as we were growing up also has an influence on our parenting style.
Conditions such as chronic illness, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and any of the Autism spectrum disorders can have a profound effect on how a child sees the world and this can change the way a child interacts with the world. These conditions can add a level of complexity to the way we bring up a child.
Similarly, if we ourselves suffer from a condition that has a major effect on our lives, this can affect the way we parent our children. Depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, relationship issues and medical problems are simply a few of the conditions in our lives that can make parenting more of a challenge.
Seeking help from a professional is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it can make parenting an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both our children and ourselves.
